Turn Woes into Wins!

Most entrepreneurs are living, breathing, creative idea machines, multi-gifted, risk-takers, which can be a blessing or curse, or for better or even worse. It is sad to say, I hear all the time: “I have too many ideas”; “I really don’t know what I should do first!”;  “I have so many gifts and talents, I don’t know what to do.”; “I am not the best decision-maker”; and “I have failed in the past.” (just to name a few) . Almost every entrepreneur I have ever met has expressed these woes. Yes, it is super awesome to be so brilliant and gifted, but unfortunately this amazing gift ends up at a standstill and eventually hitting a big wall called, “Analysis Paralysis”. Oh yes, analysis paralysis is where you overthink an action to the extent where you actually never take action and you are stuck. You are stuck in the ‘What if…” zone: “What if my new idea doesn’t take off?”; “What if people don’t believe in me as I step into the new industry?”; and “What if I fail again?”. As Aj Joshi said,”Business is a game of chess, think carefully before every move and make every move count.” ~Aj Joshi The key word is…”move”!

Woe #1…A MILLION AND ONE IDEAS: WIN STRATEGY – Write them ALL down! Highlight all of the ideas that are in direct correlation with the vision and mission of your company. After doing your homework to perform a feasibility study on your ideas, prioritize the ones that will make the most impact in the market, while generating the most revenue. The other ideas can be optimized in a business venture, partnering, or collaborating with another company. Just make a Decision!

Woe #2…Multi-gifted and talented: WIN STRATEGY – Live your Life Out Loud…play all the cards you were dealt, leave nothing on the table! Most of the time you can utilize all of your gifts within your primary business. However, if you have a gift that falls outside of your primary industry, well it’s time to launch and explore the other industry. For example, I am a business strategist and a poet (I know go figure…lol!). Just get out there and do it…I did! It’s fun to explore and launch the other sides of who you are. Someone is waiting on that gift or talent that you have kept locked away. Just make a Decision!

Woe #3…Past unwise decisions and failures: WIN STRATEGY – You cannot live in your past. Do not let your past block your future. You must learn from unwise decisions and failures. In every unwise decision and failure is a lesson and blessing; take both and move on! Use the wisdom you learned to launch you into the next BIG MOVE of your life! New products, services, niche market, and partnerships are all waiting for you on the other side of your LEAP over the past. Just make a Decision!

Do you know if there is a niche’ target market with a unique problem (that has not been tapped)?

Do you know what other problems your customers or potential customers are having?

Do you know if there are gaps in product lines or services within your industry?

You can do your research to try and get answers to these questions, but it is not enough to do your research and development internally. You must create an ecosystem of contributors to innovation that taps into the ideas of your customers, suppliers, business partners, employees, and business network contacts. Here are a few tips for creating this innovative environment:

  • Develop a system to collect new ideas from your contributors (set up a link on a portal or your website and/or have a drop box in the office).
  • Monthly meetings should include brainstorming and small group mastermind sessions. Offer an incentive and reward innovation and celebrate success during the launch of the new product/service.
  • Survey your current and past customers for feedback or even give them a space to submit their idea for possible reward (if launched).
  • Look for the brightest and best innovative thinkers in your industry and pay them top dollar. It will be a very wise investment.

Assess Business Value: Conduct a feasibility study to include a cost-benefit analysis, knowing your target market and project how it will affect your overall company short- and long-term.

The Power of Words Series: Decisions

Decision is defined as: a determination arrived at after consideration, a conclusion, to make a final choice about what to do,to select as a course of action, to infer on the basis of evidence, to bring to a definitive end, and to induce to come to a choice.

Of course, while making a decision is very common place in our day-to-day living, therefore, you may wonder why it would be considered to be such a powerful word. Decisions hold the key to your future in both business and life. Your ability to just make a decision when faced with many alternatives is key to making progress in your life in all areas.  Life is made up of choices. Wayne Dyer says, “Our lives are the sum total of the choices we have made.”. For the most part, this is true (except for things that may have happened when we were young and we had no control), and the choices that we make or don’t make dictate where we will be in the days ahead of us.  We have the power to change the direction of our lives with one decision at a time. If you don’t like the way things are going in your life, make a decision for a change.

In an old medical alert commercial, there is a scene where an elderly lady is lying on the floor yelling, “Help! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!”. She had a physical limitation that prevented her from getting off of the floor. In our businesses and in life, there are challenges that arise that make us stumble and fall, but unlike the elderly lady lying on the floor you do have the ability to get up. You can make a decision to get up and start again! It does not matter what has happened in your business or life, who is at fault, or any other perceived limitation, if you have breath in your body, it is time that you make the decision to get up and move forward.  Many people have gone through and overcome great hardship and still kept pressing through to achieve their purpose and destiny. You too have what it takes to fulfill your purpose and destiny in spite of the adversity, if you just make the decision to get back up again.

Overtime, various scholars have developed models for effective decision making. In this article, the focus is not on the process, but on encouraging you to MAKE A DECISION to GET RESULTS IN YOUR LIFE! If you do not make a decision you have made a decision to stay stuck in the state, the position and condition you are currently in. It is easier to stare at your condition and complain about it, than it is to make a decision to get up and DO something about it by MAKING A DECISION!

P.O.W. Series: Focus

Focus is defined as the center of activity, attraction, or attention; point of concentration; directed attention,emphasis; direction; a state or condition permitting clear perception or understanding; adjustment for distinct vision; also the area that may be seen distinctly or resolved into a clear image.

Let’s have a confession session. Do you struggle with staying focused? I must say at times this can be difficult for me and takes real concentration and meditation before I can bring my mind to successfully focus for a long period of time. However, focus is absolutely necessary for success in life. We must focus on our vision, our goals and the assignment at hand to successfully accomplish what we set out to do. Dr. Myles Munroe used an eagle’s focus on their prey to articulate the importance of Focus:

Eagles have strong vision, which focuses up to 5 kilometers from the air. When an eagle sites prey- even a rodent from this distance, he narrows his focus on it and sets out to get it. No matter the obstacle, the eagle will not move his focus from the prey until he grabs it. Have a vision and remain focused no matter what the obstacle and you will succeed.

Keep your vision in front of you and focus on accomplishing our goals like the eagle focuses on its prey. Direct your attention and concentration on achieving your goals. Make sure you make the necessary adjustments so that you can have clear image, perception and understanding of what it takes to be successful at fulfilling your vision. You can start with a vision board to spark your motivation each day to help you stay focused. Remember it doesn’t matter what you see with your natural vision, stay focused on THE VISION that is in your mind and in your heart. 

We have to be aware that there are going to be many things that come to try and distract us from achieving our goals. The distractions could come in the form of friends, relatives, or temptation of watching television when you know you have work to get done. There will also be challenges that arise in life that can get you of course, but we must remember that every obstacle can be overcome. Some people may even have a disorder that has been identified by the medical community as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).The medical definition according to Webster is a developmental disorder that is marked especially by persistent symptoms of inattention (such as distractibility, forgetfulness, or disorganization) or by symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity (such as fidgeting, speaking out of turn, or restlessness) or by symptoms of all three and that is not caused by any serious underlying physical or mental disorder. I am sure that some of you may identify these symptoms in your children or even in yourselves.  I am not taking a position for any type of medication that is on the market for this, nor am I seeking to discuss this issue. However, it is absolutely necessary to monitor your levels of distractibility, forgetfulness and disorganization. Your identification of these levels will help you to put structures and processes in place for yourself that will help you to overcome these issues and OPTIMIZE YOUR FOCUS.

How do you optimize your focus? Personally, I have to go into prayer and meditation and have complete silence when I am reading and writing. I don’t know what it takes for you to remain focused, but it is absolutely necessary for you to identify what your unique process is.  I know some people listen to music or need some type of background noise like the television to focus. Ericson Myers states, that we should control internal distractions, remove external distractions, and visualize ourselves doing the task at hand (http://www.lifehack.org/articles/productivity/10-critical-tips-prevent-distraction-and-sharpen-your-focus.html). Sometimes looking at the entire vision in the moment can overwhelm you and cause you to become stagnant. Toni Dent-McNair states the following as her process for optimizing focus: “It takes practice but, you tell your mind to tap in to one specific thing. By doing so, you can observe everything about that “thing.” I first started with objects like trees. I began to see things about the tree I had never noticed before. Then, you begin to apply this action to everything.”.

Tenacity is defined as being persistent in maintaining, adhering to, or seeking something valued or desired; not easily pulled apart; and not easily stopped.

We are continuing to tap deeper into this Power of Words Series that is inspiring, empowering and giving us the right seeds to plant in our lives that will fortify and propel us into our purpose and destiny.  This blog has been on FIRE with expressing the importance of pursuing Purpose, being Intentional in our pursuit, and doing everything with Intensity!

As we delve deeper into our series, we must realize the pursuit of our purpose and destiny requires Tenacity! It requires us to be persistent with a dogged devotion to achieving our goal. We must be insistent upon producing measurable results as we progress and move forward toward our destiny. There will be times in our pursuit that some stages will take longer than others and it is during these times that we must remain patient.  It is during these times that are desire to achieve the goal may begin to fade. However, we must be Tenacious! Titus Lucretius Carus once said, “Constant dripping hollows out a stone.”.  We must understand that it is our constant chopping away at the tasks, that will fulfill the objectives, that will in time help us to achieve our goals and move us closer to our destined place.

Along the way, “life happens” and circumstances arise that present challenges, nevertheless we must be Tenacious. We must be stalwart, which means marked by outstanding strength and vigor of body, mind, and spirit. In order to be Tenacious we must be undaunted and courageous when these tribulations arise in our lives. It is important that we root, ground and fortify ourselves spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically, so that we can remain Tenacious.

 

There are many people, including myself, that are testaments to what it takes to remain Tenacious even through tests and trials in our lives. It is during these times, that the thought to give up and through in the towel comes to mind.  But, when you have to “get a grip”! “Get a grip” on that your goal, “get a grip” on your dream and don’t let anything pull you apart from it! You must be UNSTOPPABLE in your pursuit! THERE IS NO “THROWING IN THE TOWEL”! The only thing you need to do with the proverbial “towel” is use it to wipe your brow and keep pressing toward your Dreams! And be Tenacious About it! Remember you will WIN if you don’t quit!

Intensity is defined as having or showing a characteristic in extreme degree, marked by or expressive of great zeal, energy, determination, very strong feeling, deeply felt and concentration.

Pursue everything you do with INTENSITY! You are given breath each morning, which means you experience a new day and opportunity to pursue your purpose and destiny with intention! The fulfillment in your arrival to this destined place is contingent upon how passionate you are about living your life to it’s maximum potential designed specifically for you! You were born to manifest Greatness in the earth, so there is a responsibility you have to PURSUE your PURPOSE with INTENSITY!

You will only have what it takes to fulfill your dreams, based on how bad you actually want to LIVE YOUR DREAMS! I have 3 questions for you:

  1. ARE YOU LIVING YOUR DREAMS?
  2. DO YOU WANT TO LIVE YOUR DREAMS?
  3. WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT LIVING YOUR DREAMS?

The answer to these questions, should IGNITE an INTENSE FIRE WITHIN YOU! There should be evidence showing in your life that you are pursing your dreams with an extreme degree of passion, zeal, and concentration.

Marcus Buckingham said, “Always work hard. INTENSITY clarifies! It creates not only momentum, but also the pressure you need to feel either friction or fulfillment.” The INTENSITY that you feel to fulfill your dreams, will create the momentum that you need to arrive at your destination. The pressure is needed, because it acts as the INTENSE flame that will keep the fire burning to create a level of friction and discomfort in your current state to drive you to the place of fulfillment.  Therefore, when people see you going after your dreams like a it’s your next breath and they ask you, “Does it really take all of that?”, respond “YES, and then some!”.
