The Power of Words Series: Decisions

Decision is defined as: a determination arrived at after consideration, a conclusion, to make a final choice about what to do,to select as a course of action, to infer on the basis of evidence, to bring to a definitive end, and to induce to come to a choice.

Of course, while making a decision is very common place in our day-to-day living, therefore, you may wonder why it would be considered to be such a powerful word. Decisions hold the key to your future in both business and life. Your ability to just make a decision when faced with many alternatives is key to making progress in your life in all areas.  Life is made up of choices. Wayne Dyer says, “Our lives are the sum total of the choices we have made.”. For the most part, this is true (except for things that may have happened when we were young and we had no control), and the choices that we make or don’t make dictate where we will be in the days ahead of us.  We have the power to change the direction of our lives with one decision at a time. If you don’t like the way things are going in your life, make a decision for a change.

In an old medical alert commercial, there is a scene where an elderly lady is lying on the floor yelling, “Help! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!”. She had a physical limitation that prevented her from getting off of the floor. In our businesses and in life, there are challenges that arise that make us stumble and fall, but unlike the elderly lady lying on the floor you do have the ability to get up. You can make a decision to get up and start again! It does not matter what has happened in your business or life, who is at fault, or any other perceived limitation, if you have breath in your body, it is time that you make the decision to get up and move forward.  Many people have gone through and overcome great hardship and still kept pressing through to achieve their purpose and destiny. You too have what it takes to fulfill your purpose and destiny in spite of the adversity, if you just make the decision to get back up again.

Overtime, various scholars have developed models for effective decision making. In this article, the focus is not on the process, but on encouraging you to MAKE A DECISION to GET RESULTS IN YOUR LIFE! If you do not make a decision you have made a decision to stay stuck in the state, the position and condition you are currently in. It is easier to stare at your condition and complain about it, than it is to make a decision to get up and DO something about it by MAKING A DECISION!

Power of Words Series: Manifest

Manifest is defined as able to be seen; clearly shown or visible; capable of being easily understood or recognized; clearly evident, obvious, and indisputable.

As I approach the powerful word, “manifest”, I want you, the reader, to understand that the word, “see” I will use in two different contexts. One context is to see in the

mind’s eye (intangible) and the other to see in the natural (tangible). We all want the result, which is the tangible manifestation right away. We want the microwave results, as soon as we think it we want it to manifest tangibly. Well, when it comes to manifesting our vision for our businesses or other major life goals, there is a process before full manifestation.

The first part of the process is seeing it in the mind’s eye (envisioning it), but it goes beyond merely seeing it in your mind. Sometimes it remains there and that is simply an idea, a dream, a wish, potential, or possibility (of which can all be endless). Nonetheless, this is the beginning of the process. However, we must move from envisioning it to it become revelation in our soul (mind, will, and emotions) and spirit. Once there has been a revelation a deeper level, it will cause a revolution (quick, sudden and complete change in our mind’s eye). This revolution should ignite a spark towards the next step in the process. The series of intangible steps has now been completed that will lead to tangible manifestation.

From envisioning to the revolution caused in your mind, the entire process you have to believe what you are seeing. I know you have heard some of the clichés’, “if you see it, you can achieve it”, “if you believe, it you can achieve it”, and you must speak it (declare it); these are true statements. The next step is to take a step! You must ACT on, put into MOTION, and put feet to your faith! Just believing in something without action ends up never manifesting (it dies). I know this is not hard to understand and of course, you have more than likely heard it all before, but so many times I have witnessed people stay stagnate and never bring into manifestation what they envisioned. Why????

Here is a partial list of what I believe happens between seeing it (intangible) and seeing it (tangible):

  • Negative self-talk and doubt creeps in.
  • Fear of failure or even fear of success.
  • Worrying about what other people think or say.
  • Do not want to move out of your comfort zone.
  • Develop excuses (perceived limitations) of why you cannot move forward (lack of resources, lack of support, lack of knowing how to execute, etc.).

You must EXECUTE to SEE tangible MANIFESTATION of your vision! There are no shortcuts! I am so passionate about seeing others manifest there purpose and destiny, that this is what I do for a living. Power of Words Series: Process

Process is defined as progress, advance, proceeding, a natural phenomenon marked by gradual changes that lead toward a particular result or growth of, and a series of actions or operations.

The process is necessary to achieve the next level of any result. The world itself operates naturally through various processes: cyclical, seasonal, human growth (mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually). However, if these processes are ever interrupted changes will continue to occur, but will not achieve the desired result. Processes can be interrupted by many different things that may or may not be a result of the decisions that we make. Traumatic things can happen in your childhood that impact and interrupt the natural growth process, most of the time disturbing the mental and emotional development processes. I identify this interrupted process as “arrested development”. Sometimes people are literally stuck emotionally at the age when the trauma occurred. Other interruptions in processes occur by a decision that we make most of the time based on our emotions.

There are processes on jobs, in education, when you are trying to reach goals. There are some points that are native to every process regardless of the subject matter. Here are some key points that we need to be aware of:

  1. You must be submitted and committed to the process. You must yield to the process and come into agreement with it fully. You also must devote yourself in complete dedication to the process.
  2. You cannot fight the process if you are going to go to the next level.
  3. You must be open to learning lessons during the process. You cannot go into a process being a “know it all” and try to skip steps during the process because you think you know it already. Your learning curve maybe steep, you must be prepared.
  4. You will make mistakes during the process. Just because you have made mistakes does not mean that you exit the process (it does not mean you are not qualified for the next level). Capitalize on the mistake by noticing the changes you can make for next time. (Check out this audio for more discussion on the Process.) Process Continues…
  1. You will go through a stripping in the process (an old paradigm, negative attitudes, lose friends, etc.).
  2. You will go through pain and pressure in the process, but don’t just go through it, grow through it.
  3. You must revisit your WHY! It will keep you committed to the process, help you endure to the end and propel you to the next level. (Check out this audio for more discussion on the Process.)Process Continues Part 2

If we cannot handle going through the process properly with patience, it will show in the lack of advancement and ultimately forfeiting our destined place. We must become masters in allowing the process to take place, without rushing and moving ahead prematurely.  When we move ahead prematurely and not allow the process to come to full maturity we end up with a defective result or missing the mark completely.

Passion is defined as a strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept; intense, driving, an overmastering feeling; and conviction and ardent affection; and love.

Passion is a word that many use to describe what they feel when they love to do something. People say things like, “I am very passionate about helping the youth”. I believe that we have used this word very flippantly and lightly, because it has become so common. The common usage of the word passion has affected the true essence of the depth in proper definition of the word.  People can say that they are passionate about an activity or effort and then walk away from it to move on to the next thing they are “passionate” about.  This passion is the same word used to define the sufferings of Jesus Christ between the night of the Last Supper and his death. His intense love (passion) to fulfill His purpose and destiny drove Him to the Cross to die for our sins. Jesus Christ did not just turn around, walk away or decide that it was going to be too hard and change His mind, but His passion drove Him to the Cross. I believe this meaning helps us put the depth of this word in the proper perspective.

Now that we have established and grasped the true essence of the word passion it can be used to help you properly identify your purpose and then be used as fuel to drive you to your destiny. As with Jesus, He was born to go to the Cross for our sins (His purpose) and it was His passion that drove (acted as the fuel) to press His way past the pain that He had to go through, all the way to the fulfillment of His destiny. Thus, we must use this same passion in the fulfillment of our purpose and destiny. It may get hard along the way and may be even painful, but your passion will not let you turn around or give up. Anita Roddick said, “To succeed you have to believe in something with such a passion that it becomes a reality.”. We must believe in our purpose and our vision with such a passion that it becomes a reality. With passion we can bring our dream and declaration into manifestation.

Discipline is defined as orderly or prescribed conduct or pattern of behavior and self-control.

The word discipline makes some people tense to even hear or speak it, because it means they must live within some type of order governed by rules and restrictions. Our natural tendency is to lean towards what we feel is liberating, unconfined, and “do what I want to do, when I want to do it” attitude and behavior. However, living a fruitful life of purpose in fulfillment of your destiny demands that you practice discipline in every area of your life.  Your ability or inability to live a disciplined life is evident in the following areas:

  1. Your level of productivity.
  2. The level of excellence you aspire to.
  3. How you manage and maintain your resources (time, money, relationships, talents/gifts, mental/emotional/physical health, intellectual and physical property).
  4. Your ability to finish what you started.
  5. Your willingness to do what you do not want or feel like doing to achieve your desired result.

Your level of success and attainment of your goals is largely dependent on your ability to live a disciplined life.  The root word “disciple” is very significant in understanding the impact and importance of reaching a higher level of discipline. A disciple is a follower who has a devoted allegiance to the teachings of one chosen as a master. As a follower of Christ (Christian) this word is very familiar and serves as a way of life. In the word’s most general sense, you must be dedicated to strictly follow and effectively apply the practices and guidelines of the person, teachings, and/or field of study. A person can only be considered a disciple based on their willingness to commit and submit to the discipline. Therefore, whether we are talking about religious beliefs, studying/practicing medicine or law, or even a dietary and exercise plan, a person must be diligent to consistently conduct themselves in accordance with the orderly and prescribed teachings and behavior.

A disciplined life requires an ability to practice and maintain self-control.  We all have had struggles in some areas of our lives with maintaining self-control. You must learn how to say NO to the thoughts of “I don’t feel like it”, “this is too hard”, and “I’m tired of the same thing over and over”. These are all negative thoughts and will impede your ability to live a disciplined life if you give in to these thoughts.

There are different ways that we can practice self-discipline, below are 8 Ways to Create the Discipline Habit (www.entrepreneur.com):

  1. Make the commitment.
  2. Stay focused.
  3. Prioritize tasks.
  4. Get sufficient rest.
  5. Eat for energy.
  6. Do the little things.
  7. Follow through.
  8. Reward yourself.

 

Yes, discipline is often times painful, but practicing self-discipline can be done and is always very rewarding. However, we all have a choice, either we “suffer the pain of discipline or suffer the pain of regret”. What is your choice?

A life of discipline will lead you into a life of peace and joy in knowing that you are fulfilling your purpose and destiny, and the freedom of living out your dreams and passions. As we have now entered the New Year let’s all commit to increase our level of discipline, so that we can successfully fulfill our purpose and destiny in life.

Focus is defined as the center of activity, attraction, or attention; point of concentration; directed attention,emphasis; direction; a state or condition permitting clear perception or understanding; adjustment for distinct vision; also the area that may be seen distinctly or resolved into a clear image.

Let’s have a confession session. Do you struggle with staying focused? I must say at times this can be difficult for me and takes real concentration and meditation before I can bring my mind to successfully focus for a long period of time. However, focus is absolutely necessary for success in life. We must focus on our vision, our goals and the assignment at hand to successfully accomplish what we set out to do. Dr. Myles Munroe used an eagle’s focus on their prey to articulate the importance of Focus:

Eagles have strong vision, which focuses up to 5 kilometers from the air. When an eagle sites prey- even a rodent from this distance, he narrows his focus on it and sets out to get it. No matter the obstacle, the eagle will not move his focus from the prey until he grabs it. Have a vision and remain focused no matter what the obstacle and you will succeed.

Keep your vision in front of you and focus on accomplishing our goals like the eagle focuses on its prey. Direct your attention and concentration on achieving your goals. Make sure you make the necessary adjustments so that you can have clear image, perception and understanding of what it takes to be successful at fulfilling your vision. You can start with a vision board to spark your motivation each day to help you stay focused. Remember it doesn’t matter what you see with your natural vision, stay focused on THE VISION that is in your mind and in your heart. 

We have to be aware that there are going to be many things that come to try and distract us from achieving our goals. The distractions could come in the form of friends, relatives, or temptation of watching television when you know you have work to get done. There will also be challenges that arise in life that can get you of course, but we must remember that every obstacle can be overcome. Some people may even have a disorder that has been identified by the medical community as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).The medical definition according to Webster is a developmental disorder that is marked especially by persistent symptoms of inattention (such as distractibility, forgetfulness, or disorganization) or by symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity (such as fidgeting, speaking out of turn, or restlessness) or by symptoms of all three and that is not caused by any serious underlying physical or mental disorder. I am sure that some of you may identify these symptoms in your children or even in yourselves.  I am not taking a position for any type of medication that is on the market for this, nor am I seeking to discuss this issue. However, it is absolutely necessary to monitor your levels of distractibility, forgetfulness and disorganization. Your identification of these levels will help you to put structures and processes in place for yourself that will help you to overcome these issues and OPTIMIZE YOUR FOCUS.

How do you optimize your focus? Personally, I have to go into prayer and meditation and have complete silence when I am reading and writing. I don’t know what it takes for you to remain focused, but it is absolutely necessary for you to identify what your unique process is.  I know some people listen to music or need some type of background noise like the television to focus. Ericson Myers states, that we should control internal distractions, remove external distractions, and visualize ourselves doing the task at hand (http://www.lifehack.org/articles/productivity/10-critical-tips-prevent-distraction-and-sharpen-your-focus.html). Sometimes looking at the entire vision in the moment can overwhelm you and cause you to become stagnant. Toni Dent-McNair states the following as her process for optimizing focus: “It takes practice but, you tell your mind to tap in to one specific thing. By doing so, you can observe everything about that “thing.” I first started with objects like trees. I began to see things about the tree I had never noticed before. Then, you begin to apply this action to everything.”.

Pursuit is defined as in effort to follow in order to overtake, capture, kill, or defeat, to seek, find or employ measures to obtain or accomplish a goal. 

If you are at all interested in fulfilling your purpose and destiny, then you should be in constant motion toward meeting a set of goals you have determined that will help advance you on this journey. You can choose to set the goals and casually get to them when or if you get to them, or you can make up your mind to be Relentless in our Pursuit of our goals.
 
You must not only Pursue your goals, but you must Pursue and overtake, capture, kill and defeat any negative thoughts, negative energy, and anything that comes to stand in the way of achieving your goals. The relentless Pursuit requires sacrifice: nights out on the town, your favorite TV shows, or sporting events, etc. Someone, somewhere is waiting on the answer you have to their problem, therefore we cannot be passive in our approach, but we must be aggressive. If you are not naturally aggressive, the relentless pursuit will take you outside of your comfort zone where you will have to become comfortable with being uncomfortable.
 
Using the analogy of a lion’s pursuit of the gazelle, it seeks it out, finds it, and employs measures to obtain it. The same focus, strategy, aggression and pursuit a lion uses in its capture of the gazelle, must be how you approach achieving your goals. You don’t stop until you capture it, kill it, and completely devour it!  Achieving goals requires much, but one thing that must remain consistent in reaching Goals is your Relentless Pursuit!

Priority is defined as something given or meriting attention before competing alternatives, the things that someone cares about and thinks are more important than something or someone else and therefore coming or being dealt with first.

In our pursuit of our purpose and destiny we have many things in our lives that compete for our attention on a daily basis. It is imperative to gain control over all of the things that we give our attention to in any given day.  In order to be productive to reach our goals in pursuit of our purpose and destiny we must establish a system that helps us to Maximize Every Moment Everyday (M.E.M.E.)! Overall, we must establish a plan for our lives that includes order, Priority, and sequence to enhance our ability to manage our lives according to our vision. The written plan should include: order, in terms of categorizing, Priority, based on level of importance and urgency, and sequence, regarding phases for overall completion.

John Maxwell, has helped to shift my entire paradigm from Time Management to Priority Management. He states, “Time Management is an oxymoron.  Time is beyond our control, and the clock keeps ticking regardless of how we lead our lives.  Priority management is the answer to maximizing the time we have.”  We all have the same amount of time in any given day, regardless of your current condition or position in life, from the lower, middle, upper-class to the elite billionaires of the world, we all get the same 24 hours.  It is what we do with that time, that will have the greatest impact on our lives in reaching our goals for business and for life.

If you find yourself “RUNNING OUT OF TIME” each day and not meeting your goals that you set out to reach for that day, you must step back and take a look at that day.  You must reassess what alternative did you choose that outweighed (in terms of importance) the tasks you set out to complete for the day. What did you make a Priority over achieving your goals (barring all family and health emergencies)?

Here is a list of questions that you can use to help you in your assessment:

  1. How important is it to me that I fulfill my purpose and destiny?
  2. Am I intentionally pursuing my purpose and destiny with intensity and tenacity?
  3. Do I have a clear schedule in place that everyone involved in my daily life is aware of and supportive of?
  4. Do I have a strategic plan in place for my business and/or life goals? (Remember: Priorities are easy to identify when you have a plan that includes, goals, objectives, tasks and dates of completion.)
  5. How do I need to reorganize my life to Maximize Every Moment Everyday (M.E.M.E.)?

You may say, “Well Dr. J., you don’t know what is on my plate.” And I will say well let’s check your plate to see how much on there helps to propel you towards fulfilling your purpose and destiny.  It’s time to do a PLATE CHECK! Successful Priority management requires sacrifice! There are times in life that leisurely activities must be limited, inclusive of, but not limited to: television, hanging out with friends, retail therapy, or even curling up with your favorite novel, etc. While I am not here to be a taskmaster, I am here to motivate you to Prioritize and “Master Your Tasks”!

Make your Purpose a Priority! Let’s Tap Into the Power of these words to Power Up and Soar Beyond the Limits! I want to encourage you to post these words where you can see them daily as reminders. Tenacity is defined as being persistent in maintaining, adhering to, or seeking something valued or desired; not easily pulled apart; and not easily stopped.

We are continuing to tap deeper into this Power of Words Series that is inspiring, empowering and giving us the right seeds to plant in our lives that will fortify and propel us into our purpose and destiny.  This blog has been on FIRE with expressing the importance of pursuing Purpose, being Intentional in our pursuit, and doing everything with Intensity!

As we delve deeper into our series, we must realize the pursuit of our purpose and destiny requires Tenacity! It requires us to be persistent with a dogged devotion to achieving our goal. We must be insistent upon producing measurable results as we progress and move forward toward our destiny. There will be times in our pursuit that some stages will take longer than others and it is during these times that we must remain patient.  It is during these times that are desire to achieve the goal may begin to fade. However, we must be Tenacious! Titus Lucretius Carus once said, “Constant dripping hollows out a stone.”.  We must understand that it is our constant chopping away at the tasks, that will fulfill the objectives, that will in time help us to achieve our goals and move us closer to our destined place.

Along the way, “life happens” and circumstances arise that present challenges, nevertheless we must be Tenacious. We must be stalwart, which means marked by outstanding strength and vigor of body, mind, and spirit. In order to be Tenacious we must be undaunted and courageous when these tribulations arise in our lives. It is important that we root, ground and fortify ourselves spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically, so that we can remain Tenacious.

 

There are many people, including myself, that are testaments to what it takes to remain Tenacious even through tests and trials in our lives. It is during these times, that the thought to give up and through in the towel comes to mind.  But, when you have to “get a grip”! “Get a grip” on that your goal, “get a grip” on your dream and don’t let anything pull you apart from it! You must be UNSTOPPABLE in your pursuit! THERE IS NO “THROWING IN THE TOWEL”! The only thing you need to do with the proverbial “towel” is use it to wipe your brow and keep pressing toward your Dreams! And be Tenacious About it! Remember you will WIN if you don’t quit!
